How to Grow a Tea Tree Plant

Tea tree plants can be grown in any climate, but they prefer warmer temperatures. They can be started from seed or cuttings.

If you are starting from seed, plant the seeds in well-drained soil and keep them moist. Seeds will germinate in about two weeks. Once the seedlings have emerged, thin them so that they are about 6 inches apart.

To take cuttings, choose healthy stems that are about 6 inches long. Cut the stems at a 45 degree angle just below a leaf node. Stick the cuttings in well-drained soil and keep them moist. Cuttings will root in about four weeks.

Once your tea tree plant is established, water it regularly and fertilize it monthly. prune it annually to maintain its shape. Tea tree plants can be grown in pots or in the ground. If you live in an area with cold winters, it is best to grow your tea tree plant in a pot so that you can bring it indoors when the weather gets chilly.

Tea tree plants are relatively low maintenance and are not susceptible to many pests or diseases. However, they can be affected by scale insects and mealybugs. These pests can be controlled with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil.

Harvesting Tea Leaves

Tea leaves can be harvested from your tea tree plant starting in the second year after planting. Leaves can be harvested year-round, but they are most flavorful when picked in the spring. To harvest, simply snip off the desired number of leaves from the tips of the branches. Be sure to leave enough leaves on the plant so that it can continue to photosynthesize and produce food for itself.

After harvesting, the tea leaves can be used fresh or dried. To dry tea leaves, spread them out on a clean towel and allow them to air dry for a few days. Once dry, store the leaves in an airtight container in a cool, dark place. Dried tea leaves will retain their flavor for up to six months.

To make tea, simply steep 1-2 teaspoons of dried tea leaves in hot water for 3-5 minutes. You can adjust the amount of time that you steep the tea depending on how strong you like it. Be sure to remove the leaves from the water before drinking so that they do not become bitter.
